Several months ago Maryville decided to keep a couple of beehives. Our beekeeper visits several times a month to keep an eye on the bees.
Beekeeping in New Zealand started as a home craft as far back as 1850's, not long after European settlement, and it is now an established industry as well as hobby activity. The production of Manuka Honey, valued for its antibacterial properties is becoming increasingly important. Pollen, beeswax and propolis (bee glue), are also produced and exported. In 2014 there were over 500,00 hives in New Zealand, producing 17.6 thousand tonnes of honey for the year 2013-2014.
We are very much looking forward to tasting our first honey from our hives.
